Most issues on teams or in relationships can be traced back to poor communications or lack of communication. I know that is true for me, my team and my family.
Today, we are going to identify your primary personality styles using the DISC Personality System and learn how to engage in productive communication with people who are different than you. Communication and conflict resolution are critical skills all leaders need to develop. Together, we will discuss: What causes communication breakdowns, mastering conflict resolution through courageous communication and understanding modern communications strengths and weaknesses. Improving these areas helps us grow in leadership, communication, building trust and decision making.
Many times we feel like we have to communicate how we are feeling right now or we have to fix the issue immediately - but many times a delay is not a bad thing. We need to take the time to understand the situation, the person we are talking to and the best way to communicate to get resolution.
My father, The General, used to say to me in high school: “Hey bud, if what you are about to say is your first instinct – go with your second.”
As we work through today, let us think of our personalities as our first instinct. DISC is one of the tools we can use to help us communicate more clearly with the people around us. While we may be drawn towards looking at the world through a certain lens, we can exercise the 6 Habits when we communicate and become a Leader of Character.
